European Internal Security in the Wake of the War in Ukraine

In the aftermath of the war in Ukraine, the EU is becoming an increasingly important actor in internal security. An ever-growing number of internal security issues are regional and international in nature, not just national. Consequently, the EU is expanding its activities from coordinating cooperation among national actors to deepening its own operational methods. The project is based on the idea that more than ever, Finland’s security is Europe’s security, and Europe’s security is Finland’s security.

The project maps the EU’s efforts to support internal security within the EU in the wake of the war in Ukraine. It focuses on the EU’s new and evolving operational methods and the developing cooperation among EU members, through which the EU aims to strengthen its internal security. Additional challenges in bolstering internal security are posed by increased digitalization, online criminal activities, and the challenging of democratic values.

Through this mapping, the project provides an overview of the EU’s extensive internal security activities.

The project’s policy briefs, expert interviews, and social media communications will be published throughout the fall of 2024.
